Tales of Prosperity of the Beneficiaries: Nagpur

After willingly consenting to giving their land for the Samruddhi Project, the various landowners from 10 districts executed their land deals with the MSRDC. Once the landowners received the compensation amount from the direct purchase scheme in their respective bank accounts through RTGS, the money is now being utilized – for the purpose of business expansion by some, for investing in government schemes by some and for the purpose of buying new agricultural land for farming by others. This is a brief review of such “Samruddha” stories – meaning “Tales of Prosperity” of some of the beneficiaries in Nagpur.

Thousands of farmers are putting the compensation money received from giving their land for the Samruddhi Mahamarg Project to good use. Purushottam Pethkar of Borgoan Rithi village in Hingna Taluka of Nagpur is one such beneficiary landlord! His family includes him, his wife, two sons and two married daughters. He owned 6 acres of farmland, and farming was the family’s livelihood.

Purushottam, along with his two sons would work in the field. The 6 acre land was used to grow cotton and tur dal. The farm was a dryland, and the family’s financial condition was not strong enough to let them experiment with the produce on such land. A year’s worth of toil on the field barely managed to earn them an annual income of ₹ 3 lakh. They realized that this income did not sufficiently provide for the family’s cost of living. The family had to additionally spend on the marriages of their two daughters, and on the education of their two sons. One of the sons used to juggle a job along with farming.

The land being ancestral land, the family was emotionally invested in it. Therefore, they initially objected to the Samruddhi Mahamarg Project. What worried the Pethkar family even more was giving up 4.5 acres of their land for the proposed highway. What would they be left with? How will they manage to earn a living to feed the entire family? These were some of the questions bothering them. All their worries were put to an end when they were assured a compensation of good amount for giving up the 4.5 acres of land. Their initial objection to the project slowly faded away.

The compensation received by the Pethkar family after executing the land deal with the MSRDC enabled them to purchase a 12 acre land in the nearby Mouje Kolgaon village, in place of the 4.5 acre land they gave up for the Samruddhi Mahamarg. They wish to experiment with the produce in the new field, said Yogesh, one of the sons of Purushottam Pethkar. He also plans to keep aside some amount in the back in his parents’ name. Receiving the compensation amount into their bank account was a big financial relief for the family. Purushottam Pethkar believes this will help enable a happier future for the family.

Just like Purushottam Pethkar, 46 ares and 6 ares of land from Hingna taluka, belonging to Subhash Mhaiskar and Uttam Madavi respectively, will be used in the Samruddhi Mahamarg Project, for which they have been compensated well under the direct purchase of land scheme.
